PIERROT IN THE AIR HORN - ACT II: LARYNX

SINGLE CHANNEL VIDEO PROJECTION - ACT I of III
& INSTALLATION (OBJECTS + WORKS ON PAPER)
2023

Pierrot in the Air Horn is a project composed in three discrete acts that deals with the ancient notion of the vital breath and the production of utterance.

Act III: Pneuma, 2024 is a single channel video projection that engages the pump, or lungs, responsible for the creation of pressurized air that makes the air horn’s sound possible. The title refers to the ancient Greek word for “breath” or “spirit." The video features a series of objects and sites that are illuminated by a large spotlight that dims up then down as the camera subtly and simultaneously pulls away from then approaches the illuminated subject. This ‘in camera’ effect is timed to the duration of a human’s average deep breath, the ‘automatic pause’, and exhale. This visual respiration is accompanied by audio recordings taken from within the bellows of an antique accordion, a mechanical lung filling up then dispelling air. The subject of each illuminated shot spans material (organic vs inorganic) and environment (natural vs urban or constructed), and engages with various types of volumes. Like a thought emerging out of the darkness of our consciousness, these circular, illuminated encounters come into being then vanish like a breath.
